Hello r/Japan, this is Dave from Nikkei Asia’s audience engagement team. We wanted to share this article free to read for a limited time. Let us know what you think of the story!
This man is a horrificly against any stability. He’s neurotic
This is nothing less than worldwide tariff extortion. It’s sickening to watch but the US is rocketing towards authoritarian dictatorship led by a convicted felon sociopath.
It’s sad to see countries bullied into submission by this deranged lunatic.
He’s just going to TACO by next week anyway.
This is so tiring.
Just kick their miltary bases out of Japan. What do you need the Americans protecting you from China for, if America itself acts like a predator? High time for Japan to look after its own defense, and take distance from the US.
Just consume non-American goods. Honestly there are quite a decent amount of alternatives nowadays.
Per capita Japan already consumes more American goods than Americans consume Japanese goods. This idea that you can have a population that’s almost 3x as large but expect a trade balance is just dumb. Hopefully this will get Japan off of American big tech. The rest of the free world(a list that no longer includes the US) needs to collaborate on creating a challenger in the datacenter sphere to Amazon/Microsoft/Google.
Fact is PM Ishiba sidelined former PM Abe associates that know and are on good terms with Trump. And he nuked negotiations over US goods that Japanese are unlikely to even buy.
Japan faces? No. Americans buying Japanese products will face.
Japan won’t compromise on rice imports because during WW2 they nearly starved to death because they outsourced a lot of their rice production to Manchuria and Korea, but were then blockaded. After that the Japanese government promised to produce a certain quantity of rice in Japan, so it has to protect Japanese rice growers. This isn’t an issue they can budge on because it’s an issue of national food security.
And Japan doesn’t really care about the “automobile” imports because they aren’t what people think they are. Most Japanese cars are made in the USA. What they’re talking about here are custom-built huge construction vehicles and other specialist equipment. A 30 to 35% tariff on these will definitely huge US businesses because these machines go for tens or even hundreds of millions of dollars. Japan might see some cancelled orders, which would be irritating because they’re custom machines, but is unlikely to be a major factor because these are **custom built** machines and the customers **need them**.
At the end of the day the USA has a lot more to lose than Japan and Trump is pushing on an issue he doesn’t seem to understand that Japan simply cannot and will not compromise on.
Lots of posts seem to imply that Japan would be paying these tariffs on American stuff. This actually means Americans pay a tariff on Japanese goods.
Still a good idea not to buy any American goods though.
The USA is the largest rice exporter to Japan followed by Thailand.
Yet hey, Taco doesn’t want the facts.
Time to dump those treasuries
Can’t find any info if this is going to also affect imports under $800? (as in will the de minimis rule be revoked like it was for China?) I have a small business (in Japan) selling mostly to the US and adding 35% of taxes would be really rough 🙁
