Different modes of transport to get through the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route

The transports are (from top left): commuter bus, electric mountain bus, trolleybus (a bus on tracks, so technically a train), ropeway, Hokuriku shinkansen (technically outside of the Alpine route, but you'll likely take it to get to or from it), mountain railway, and two funiculars. Plus, a bonus shot of Kurobe Dam in the middle, which is the highest dam in Japan and roughly the mid point of the route. An essential activity in Japan, especially if you're into public transport and mountain views.
