Heavily Tattoo’d – Move a Bad Idea?

Hi everyone!

I am someone who is heavily tattoo'd – artistic choice so all are professionally done. Most are in Japanese artwork which include my full neck, arms, hands, and torso (no face or head).

I've always had an interest in moving one day. A bit naive as I haven't visited yet, which is why I will of course visit many many times before I would fully commit to a move. I guess I'm just asking this questions so I know if that could even be feasible dream/possible goal one day considering my tattoo's?

Thank you to everyone who takes the time to comment!!!

  1. Since your neck and hands are tattooed that could be difficult. Most companies will want you to cover tattoos, and since it’s on your hands…

Additionally, many gyms, pools, onsen, and beaches are not accessible to people with visible tattoos.

  2. Well, you definitely should visit…but holiday and living here and night and day.

People have tattoos here, even Japanese people. Your issue will be getting a visa – this usually requires a job…and getting a job in Japan with lots of tattoos, especially hands, will be even tougher than usual, unless you can come over on your own with a business?

  3. It depends on how able you are to hide them. Are you willing to cover them up, even in the hell that is the Japanese summer? Hands and neck are going to be hard, I’m not gonna lie.

Otherwise, it depends on what kind of work you’d even want to do; what are your qualifications? Do you have a 4-year degree? if not, then your tattoos don’t even matter, because you likely can’t get a visa in the first place.

  4. For tourists, it’s not a huge deal but to work in Japan, all tattoos pretty much need to be covered at work. And life would be more difficult in general since you wouldn’t be able to go to the onsen, gym, or public pools or anything like that.
