What’s your most painful shrinkflation victim?

My favorite combini onigiri, the 大 onigiri with salmon, suddenly no longer exists, and has been replaced with "salmon and mayonnaise," and is more mayonnaise than salmon :/

Have any such favorite product that has undergone some kind of serious downgrading?

  1. Konbini have always been more expensive, poorer quality, and full of devious little cost cutting schemes anyway. Waste of money shopping there regularly. Leave it to the tourists and the chronically inept in the kitchen.

  2. I remember usually around this time of the year you can pick up cool little freebies when you buy beer at the supermarket. Maybe it was a little cooler bag, a glass, stubby holder or key chain. Often there was one for every 6 pack of beer. This year I saw a box of tissues tacked on to a 24-case and I thought that was kinda sad.

  3. Bought a 大 salmon onigiri at Lawson like 3 days ago. Have you checked there?

  4. Ritz cheese crackers went from 2x9ct. sleeves to 2x6ct. Ritz is dead to me now.

  5. The chocolate peanuts have gotten smaller and increased 50% in cost since I arrived in 2017.

But for me right now it’s the lack of potato salad at ootoya.

  6. Potato chips.

My gosh, I have to do a shake test now just to see how much actual chip is in the packet as opposed to just air.

Family Mart still comes through, but other brands – wow it’s ridiculous how few chips you get now.

  7. A lot of food items are getting smaller 😂
    しょうがない but it’s still painful.

  8. Pack of Best Three Meiji chocolate bags. ☹️ It’s one of the chocolates that I like but will not inhale an entire bag of so they’re really good for chocolate cravings.

  9. Not a favorite product, but the cheapest drink in the 100円 vending machine next to my work is ¥110 :/ (almost everything outside of water is more than that though, and it actually used to all be ¥100)

  10. My favorite mazesoba place used to offer these tiny bacon bricks with their suba. Now it’s just a very tiny very thin bacon strip 🙁

  11. The packaged chicken breasts at the conbini have been getting smaller and smaller over the years.

  12. I’ve been buying a little box salad for lunch every day for years. It was mostly shredded cabbage filler with a few lettuce leaves and slivers of other veggies on top, but perfectly fine for my purposes. For 199円 you could get 175g of it, which was fair.

About a month ago I noticed the package felt lighter. Sure enough, same price for only 120g of salad. The reduced ingredient was the cabbage. Weirdly, right next to this salad is a different version with the same amount of cabbage as the shrinkflation salad, only with a meager tossing of corn over the top. Same price for 175g. I don’t like corn on my salad, and won’t support the shrinkflated version, so I ended up switching to the Evil Corp. supermarket branch down the road to buy their version instead. It actually has more salad in it and is about 20円 cheaper, but sucks because I was trying to support my local small market in buying the other one…Oh well. That loyalty isn’t worth being ripped off, and I still shop there for other things anyway, so it’s not really hurting them. I just wish I could still make that place my one stop for groceries.

  13. Rice. The same price now buys me only 2kg instead of 4, it’s crazy out there.

Talking about the less obvious ones, when I unpack to wash my pack of シャインマスカット costing me 2000 yen from the same store, I have a strong feeling the package is now smaller than it was a few years ago.

  14. Over time the egg sandwiches at 7-11 swapped the sausage for ham, made the ham thinner and last I checked got rid of the egg entirely.

  15. A lot of combini sandwiches don’t have the spicy mayo (からし入り) anymore. I remember until recently when most of them included that ingredient. They have some type of “dressing” (ドレッシング) now.

  16. When did the switch happen from three slices to 2 for konbini sandwiches?

  17. SPAM MUSUBI FROM FAMIMA. Bruh that shit was so big it so good…but last time i ate it, shit was so small i felt like eating a 75% onigiri T_T

  18. One less hash brown alongside my hamburg on a Saizeriya hot plate, Potato Chips packets definitely contain less chips, Oven pizzas diameter has shrunk, My favorite Sapporo Shio Kalbi Instant Yakisoba no longer has Kalbi…..it’s now dehydrated meat substitute balls.

  19. 60g doritos chips… that’s like 14 chips. I have way too much salsa left over after 1 bag.

  20. The size of onogiri filling shrinks so much over the years.
Soon they will be just rice with fish flavors at 200 yen.

Famichiki is already shrinked by half. Their chumai/sausage otsumamis are mostly flour now.

  21. My favorite cream coffee used to cost 100 yen, now it costs 110 and has a new recipe that makes it taste weird.

  22. If you worry about prices don’t shop at konbini because everything is at least 20% to 50% more expensive than supermarkets by default
