New “heat-resistant” rice variety “Hinatamaru” developed. Rice that does not lose quality even in high temperatures and is resistant to insects and diseases. Cultivation will begin this season.

As rice prices keep rising, farmers are getting more worried—especially with unusual summer heat. In response, a new rice variety called "Hinata-maru", developed in Saga Prefecture, is now being planted. It was made to handle hot weather and pests better than older types.

This new rice took 12 years to develop and is more heat-resistant than "Hinohikari," a common variety that struggles in the heat. In test fields last year, Hinata-maru produced about 1.5 times more rice per 10 ares (about 600 kg), making it very promising.

Farmers are hopeful. One farmer said Hinata-maru has a light taste, large grains, and is good quality—perfect for consumers who want safe and tasty rice. Another farmer said he hopes it brings comfort to people, just like the warmth in its name.

Hinata-maru is now being planted across 1,400 hectares in Saga and will mostly be sold for restaurants and business use in Kyushu. The goal is to price it the same as Hinohikari.

Even with price concerns, farmers are doing their best to adapt and keep rice production strong.
