Naha Ferry sold out for months?

Hi, we are in Naha right now and I got to admit I did not research this topic enough:
They seem to be only 2 ferries in the morning for Tokashiki Island and they are apparently sold out until ca September.
Thats it? Only 2 ferries for 200 people? Thats not much for such a City.
Can I try to get on that ferry spontaniously when I show up in the morning?
Is there another way to get to the Island without booking month in advance?
Transportation on Okinawa is really complicated compared to Japan itself but I knew that.
About ferries I thought they would be more frequently.

  1. You can call them to ask if they still have tickets available (they might have some reserved for phone bookings) but even for phone bookings people usually book in advance.

If Tokashiki is sold out, you can consider other islands.

  2. There are more than 2 a day- there is a car/people ferry a few trips a day and a faster ferry for just people at least twice a day but I think more in the summer.

  3. Yes there are only a few ferries. Kerama islands belong to a national park and they basically use the low number of ferries to manage the number of visitors.
Summer is high season so it can be hard to find availability for ferries, though others pointed out that there’s some.

  4. Last week, I went to the ticket office 8am in the morning and could get a ticket spontaneously (around 5000 yen for the full trip). I think it depends how many people you are; if I were you, I would come to the ticket counter as early as possible and ask if they have tickets available. The ferry was far away from being sold out btw, there were super many spaces that were empty although it said everywhere that it’s sold out.

I recommend going to Tokashiki Island 100%, its a completely different vibe than Naha and there were the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen.

    Good luck!!

  5. High speed or regular? That was the mistake we made at first. Slow ferry should have room. It’s huge. I’m not talking car, just passenger.
