NHK in serious revenue loss, says it will maintain quality and quantity of programs… One-quarter of production costs are labor costs

NHK (Japan’s public broadcaster) reported a financial loss for the second year in a row for fiscal year 2024. The deficit was expected due to a 10% cut in TV license fees in late 2022, but the situation is becoming more serious.

Over the past five years, NHK has lost 1.45 million subscription contracts. On top of that, the payment rate for license fees dropped in every prefecture except Kochi, meaning fewer people are paying even if they have a contract.

This highlights growing financial pressure on NHK. With rising costs, it's unclear if the broadcaster will be able to bring in enough income to keep up with its spending in the future.
