On July 4, Agriculture Minister Koizumi announced that the government will release reserve rice for use in food processing industries, such as sake breweries and rice crackers makers. This move comes in response to concerns about a shortage of rice for processing, as more farmers have shifted to producing table rice due to rising prices.
The rice will start being sold in August. Industry groups had requested early sales, and Koizumi said the goal is to help businesses continue operating with peace of mind. The exact amount of rice to be released will be decided later.
