China court to issue verdict in case of Japan man accused of spying

TL;DR A Japanese man accused of spying while working for Astellas Pharma in Beijing will receive a verdict from a Chinese court. The Japanese government has called for his release, highlighting concerns about arbitrary enforcement of China’s counterespionage law. Since Beijing's counterespionage law first came into force in 2014, 17 Japanese citizens have been detained for alleged spying. Five are still being held in China.
