On July 3, Sanseito party leader Sohei Kamiya gave a campaign speech in Tokyo where he said, “Older women can’t have children,” and called for a society that makes it easier for younger women to have and raise kids. The comment has sparked criticism, and that part of the speech is no longer viewable on the party’s official YouTube channel.
Kamiya said Japan has focused too much on pushing women into the workforce and not enough on supporting family life. He suggested that after finishing school, women should feel free to either work or choose to raise children, and society should support both options.
When asked by reporters to clarify his comments, Kamiya said he was only referring to biological facts, not being discriminatory. He did not retract his statement, saying it's a reality that women have a limited time in life to give birth.
