Earthquake of Magnitude 6 Strikes Akusekijima in Kagoshima; No Tsunami Threat as Tremors Continue Near Tokara Islands


On July 3rd at 4:13 p.m., an earthquake hit near the Tokara Islands in Kagoshima Prefecture. A strong tremor, rated lower 6 on Japan’s scale, was felt on Akusekijima Island. The quake had a depth of about 20 km and a magnitude of 5.5. No tsunami warning was issued. Earlier the same day, several smaller quakes (magnitude 4) were also recorded on the island.
