Heatwave Expected to Intensify from Weekend to Next Week – Heatstroke Risk Rises as Record Hot Days Increase; Eastern and Northern Japan Nearing End of Rainy Season

This week, many parts of Japan saw temperatures over 35°C (95°F), with heatstroke alerts issued in multiple areas. But the heat is expected to get even worse from this weekend into next week. The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a warning about extreme heat, urging people to take precautions.

The rainy season is almost over in regions like Tokai, Hokuriku, Kanto-Koshin, and Tohoku, which means the peak summer heat is just beginning.

Looking at long-term data, summers are clearly getting hotter. In the 1980s, Tokyo often had zero days a year over 35°C, with the worst years only reaching 3 days. In contrast, recent years regularly see over 20 such days annually. Even people in their 20s now are experiencing much hotter summers than when they were kids.

This pattern is similar across the country. In some years, over 1,000 people die from heatstroke. With more heat coming after the rainy season, extra caution is needed to stay safe.
