At a press conference, Fukuoka Mayor Soichiro Takashima criticized the national government’s plan—promised by the ruling LDP and Komeito parties—to give every citizen ¥20,000 in cash. He said the plan would cost the city about ¥1 billion just to manage, including setting up call centers and hiring workers.
He called it an “unbelievable burden” and urged the national government to take full responsibility instead of leaving it to local governments. He also said the government should use the MyNumber system, which links people’s ID to their bank accounts, and pass the necessary laws to handle such payouts more efficiently.
