Business leaders have expressed concern that political parties in the recent Upper House election are focusing mainly on short-term measures like cash payments and tax cuts to fight rising prices. They want more debate on long-term issues such as wage increases, social security reform, and agriculture policy.
Yoshinobu Tsutsui, head of the Japan Business Federation, said Japan faces many structural problems both at home and abroad that need a long-term approach. He called for serious discussions on topics like maintaining a free global economy and improving worker productivity.
Takeshi Niinami, leader of the Japan Association of Corporate Executives, said parties’ policies are too focused on quick fixes and lack clear plans for strategic reforms. He stressed the need for ongoing wage hikes, lowering social insurance costs to increase take-home pay, and revising farm policies.
Ken Kobayashi, head of the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the election should be about choosing a mid-term direction, with key topics like social security and healthcare reform on the agenda.
