This is a bit tongue-in-cheek, but I’ve noticed a lot of people affectionately call Okinawa (main island) simply “Oki,” which I imagine is something of an American tradition linked to the island’s history and the ongoing US base presence.
I’m just wondering if folks are aware there’s actually a beautiful island group in Japan called the Oki Islands (隠岐諸島, Oki-shotō; also 隠岐の島 Oki-no-shima, 隠岐群島 Oki-guntō), located in the Sea of Japan and administratively part of Oki District, Shimane Prefecture.
Here’s more info if you’re curious:

“Wanna eat something at the Mac?”
Why do people always assume I mean the McDonald’s?
There’s also Oki district (大木) located in Okinawa’s own Yomitan Village.
It is goot to know this
I was born and raised in Okinawa.. and yes my friends and I from Kadena high school affectionately use Oki to describe our home. We also call our friends who never moved away “oki bums” lol.
Anyways, I had no idea there was another group of islands in Japan called the Oki Islands. Thanks for sharing and putting it on my radar because these islands look gorgeous!
I have sometimes thought when people asked for tourist information on “Oki” in this group to post a link to the appropriate information on the actual Oki islands. Though if I did actually do it I would never admit to it.
I found I used “Oki” when living there and amongst friends nowadays that lived there as well. Outside of that, I refer to it as “Okinawa”.
It’s oki to me lol
