Hello everyone.
I’ll be visiting Okinawa and would be staying in on a for a few days. Wondering how the sky’s are like near there or how far do I have to go to see some amazing stars.
We’ll be going in October for wife’s birthday and my son will be 18 months then so I I do want them to have a great experience with an easy time.
Also any recommendations for a birthday surprise?

You staying on the main island? Or going to other nearby islands? You’d have to go way up north to get good darkness but there’s some good spots. Expect about 3 hours of driving, roughly 1 1/2 there and 1 1/2 back depending where you are.
You have to go up north on mainland Okinawa for dark skies. But if you’re near Naha and can’t get up north go to Odo beach in Itoman or out on the southern coast of Chinen peninsula. South Okinawa island has a big light pollution problem, but if you’re on the southern coast looking over the ocean it might be ok.
How’s it look from Tokashiki or Zamamai? Was considering an overnight stay on one of these to see the stars if they’re suitable!
