Heads up: There’s a scam going around targeting residents in Japan, pretending to be from the Ministry of Justice. You’ll receive a formal-looking notice claiming your MyNumber was used for fraud, money laundering, or tax evasion. I received it directly to my work email, ccing my private email, and using my full legal name in addressing me.
It cites real-sounding laws and threatens arrest, deportation, frozen accounts, etc.
Red flags:
Email domain is not official (.com instead of .go.jp)
Mentions a fake “Prosecutor name”
Tells you to settle the matter “quietly and privately”
Pushes for urgent response and “verification codes”
Do not reply. Do not give any personal info. Report it to the 消費者庁 (Consumer Affairs Agency).
