I’m currently working on my Master’s thesis about blind boxes and mystery items and if you’ve ever walked around Tokyo, you’ve definitely seen them everywhere: in gachapon machines, Don Quijote, convenience stores, anime shops…
My research explores how surprise, anticipation, and rarity influence how we perceive value in those kinds of collectibles, whether it’s a gachapon capsule, a Pop Mart box, or a trading card pack.
