Mt Atago hike for Sennichimairi

Hello!
I've been doing some hiking around Kyoto (Daimonji and Hiei) and planned to do My Atago and saw that the Sennichimairi is coming up on the 31st. I love the idea of a night time hike for a festival but can't really find anything about getting back to Kyoto afterwards. A few folk online suggest sleeping on the mountain to participate in the 2am festivities and 4am sunrise but I wasn't sure how common or acceptable this was, or what I'd realistically need to take with me for that. Do people start early enough to get back down for public transport back to Kyoto?

Has anyone done the festival hike before? Any guidance would be welcome! I'm here on a 2 month apprenticeship that's drawing to a close now and would love to add this to my experiences.
