traveling to okinawa for the first time this fall

hi all!

planning a trip to okinawa this fall, been to many parts of japan multiple times but okinawa's a first!

we have a one week trip planned, planning to do 4 days at a nice resort (it'll be a babymoon!) and 2-3 days in the city. we're thinking of staying in naha (kokusai dori) just so we can get the more city-like experience of japan while we're there too. are there any other must-visit areas or places we should go to? i think my main thing i was debating/wondering was whether or not america village is worth the visit (maybe like a half day)?

for context, we're a pretty low-key couple, mostly like to walk around, see markets and shopping streets, eat good food (not really drinkers), shop, etc! (museums and historical sites aren't a must for us)
thank you 🙂

  1. I personally like visiting American village and watching the sunset there, but kokusai street is a must! I live nearby and still find new things every time I walk around. Yachimun street is also close, so you can see some pretty pottery

  2. American village is overrated. Okinawa World is one of my few “must sees,” specifically making sure to make it in time to see one of the Eisa dances (3x a day, times are on their website)

Churaumi aquarium is WAY to the north but if you make a day trip of that and Pineapple Park or there’s a Dino themed park as well it might be worth it. If the drive is too far then there’s another smaller but very nice aquarium in iias shopping center you could check out. Just next door to there is a bunch of high end shopping as well (Ashibinaa). Expensive but a bunch of high end name brands.

Senagajima has some really nice views and good food/drinks, though it’s a little expensive compared to the rest of the island.

Kokusai is a really nice place to visit, but go slightly off the main road to get a more authentic feel. There’s a covered area in the middle of the Main Street you can dip inside and has a bunch of restaurants with a more local vibe.
