Funny story.
It's very hot in Kyoto in the summer, and feels doubly hot on a day when lots of people all visit the temple together.
Somewhere within the meandering paths of Kinkaku-Ji, there's a small teahouse with a sign saying there's air conditioning plus tea and a small dessert for a nominal fee (I believe 500 yen but it's small enough I can't recall clearly).
If you go in, you can take off your shoes, sit on the tatami and enjoy exactly what's advertised.
Air conditioning, tea, and a small dessert.
I sat for about 30 minutes there, recuperating from light heat stroke and watching a few tourists filter in and out. It was never busier than 5 people at a time despite the thousands in the park.
