In the July 20 Upper House election, the Sanseito party is set to win more than 10 seats, a big jump from just 1 seat before the election. With these gains, they will hold at least 11 seats in total, allowing them to propose bills on their own (as long as the bills don’t involve budgets).
The party secured victories in electoral districts like Ibaraki, Tokyo, Aichi, and Fukuoka, and also won at least 6 proportional representation seats.
Sanseito ran on a “Japan First” platform, calling for stricter rules on foreigners to appeal to conservative voters. They also pushed policies aimed at working-age people, such as phasing out the consumption tax, reviewing social insurance costs, and giving ¥100,000 per month for each child.
