Hi, I'm trying to figure out if this is a scam. I've been cold-called by AU Hikari or So-net Hikari a few times now. At first I thought they were my current internet provider because they had my info and were offering me a cheaper rate, and you can imagine my confusion when I realized they were trying to get me to change from Docomo Hikari to their plan.
As a poor grad student, I could definitely use a cheaper rate. I'm tempted to switch, but there are a few things that don't sit right with me:
1) They are very persistent. When I say I don't want to switch, they ask me why and continue to explain why I should. They're polite, but it's unsettling that I tell them no and get pushback.
2) They call me at like 8-9 pm. Who the heck is in the office making calls to customers that late? Those are not regular business hours!
3) How did they even get my phone number in the first place? Shouldn't I be the one calling them? And there is no way for me to confirm that the number they're calling from really is AU Hikari.
I feel like an idiot every time they call because I get so overwhelmed and confused and freeze up. My Japanese is pretty good (almost N1), but the situation is so bizarre to me that I don't even know what to say to them and just stutter like a dummy. Tonight I told them I'd like to do some research and think about it before committing, and they kept pressuring me to set a day for them to call again. I don't want them to call again! I just want to be left alone to decide for myself >.<
Anyway, has this happened to you guys? Is this a scam, or is this kind of thing normal here?
