A 51-year-old unemployed woman in Hannō City, Saitama was scammed out of four gold bars worth about 22 million yen, police said on the 18th.
According to the report, starting on May 23, the woman received several phone calls from someone pretending to be a phone company worker. The caller claimed her phone was being used for a crime and told her to buy gold bars to prove her innocence. She followed the instructions and left the gold in a case at a public restroom in the city on June 3, where it was stolen.
Similar scams have been happening in the area. In May, a man in Sakado City and on July 9, a man in Kawagoe City were also tricked into handing over millions of yen worth of gold. Police are warning people to be careful.
