Small local festival in Naha going today 5-8 pm

Kind of last minute but if anyone wants to see what a local community festival is like there’s one going in on from 5-8pm today. Here’s a chance to come see a real Eisa performance as done by regular community members. The Eisa dance is 7:20pm to 7:35pm, with other performances taking place through the evening, such as the local middle school band and choir.

It’s not a huge festival, just a few small stalls with food, beer, and games, but it’s a great way to experience Okinawan culture that isn’t just about making money like some of the bigger festivals, but about community. Proceeds from the food and games goes straight to the local clubs to help pay for events for the students – everyone working the stalls is a volunteer.

Come check it out if you’ve got nothing else going on. Parking will be a pain, best bet is probably the Aeon nearby, they charge a few hundred yen but if you buy something at the Aeon on your way out and scan the receipt it will be free.
