The Moment I Felt the Inequality as a Foreign Entrepreneur in Japan

The word in the title was intended to express a difference, not inequality, which may have caused some misunderstanding.

This post is not meant as a complaint, but simply as a record. The basic level of trust for foreigners and Japanese people is inherently different. That’s why foreign entrepreneurs in Japan need to invest more time or money to earn the trust of Japanese society — this is the very real cost of trust. As one comment mentioned, this rule of trust applies universally, in any society around the world.

A few days ago, I went to the Tokyo Startup Center (東京開業センター) in Akasaka and had a conversation with an elderly official from the Legal Affairs Bureau (法務局, Hōmukyoku).

He said, “If your spouse were Japanese or a permanent resident, then doing it this way wouldn’t be a problem.”

The second half of the sentence “but unfortunately, you’re a foreigner” was left unsaid.

That was the moment I truly felt the reality of being a foreign entrepreneur in Japan.

Visa status comes before everything else.

Without the right visa, you can’t legally do anything.

To be fair, the staff at the Tokyo Startup Center were all very kind.

It’s just that the policies are what they are.
