Every time I have a nomikai with my Japanese coworkers, they often talk about events from their generation, or well-known places and restaurants. I’m usually not familiar with these topics and often have no idea what they’re referring to. But that’s okay with me. I’m also not actively trying to prepare or find common topics just for the nomikai — I just try to be courteous.
