Furusato Nozei: pointback on all platforms will stop in October this year

I didn't see any post about this.

One of the merits of furusato nozei is that you can get 10%-15% back in points like Rakuten and others. This scheme will be forbidden by the government starting on October, so if you want those sweet points, make sure to make the donations before that.

  1. On the plus side, more of the money will actually go to the cities that are supposed to be receiving the support, rather than the big corporations collecting 20% of what is supposed to be taxes.

  2. Doesn’t say anything about mileage points. I used JAL last year and will probably use ANA this year.

  3. It’s absolutely ridiculous. They’re no reason for the government to do this, it’s not like it’s unfair to anyone.

Tokyo-to complained to the government about this and they made a ruling. Tokyo-to would actually prefer if there’s no furusato nozei.

Anyways, I believe Rakuten is suing the government over this, unlikely that it’ll be overturned though

  4. Getting as much furusato shopping in as I can before the deadline. Rakuten makes mint off of furusato nozei so I wouldn’t be surprised if they find a loophole around it somehow (like pachinko payouts, just award token prizes that can be exchanged for points).

  5. My opinion might be in minority here. But I am glad to see points going away. Giving points will only result in consolidation of distribution platforms and once there is only one or two platforms, they will monopolize and dictate the program policies.

I will go on to say that program should further restrict donations using online platforms to 50% of total donations to a municipality. Pre-online platforms, the program also supported jobs locally that were part of marketing, promotion, order taking, and fulfillment that now have been significantly reduced and replaced with platform workers that are typically based in larger cities and not municipalities where donations are going.

  6. I just started doing this and i get this news!! 😭
We still get points but just ordinary 100JPY = 1point upon checking but yeah the merit of extra boost when using furusato is no longer there from oct 2025! Sad but I will continue to do furusato regardless because of tax incentives and free food
