Foreign election interference also seen in Japan: Mass postings critical of the government and posts fueling division between Japan and the U.S. confirmed on social media

Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Kazuhiko Aoki expressed concern about foreign interference in elections through the spread of false information on social media, stating that Japan is also a target of such influence operations. Government sources noted that there is evidence of posts being spread from abroad with the intent to affect Japan’s upcoming House of Councillors election. Aoki emphasized the need to monitor these activities and issue warnings as necessary.

Private data analysis firms found instances of critical posts about the Japanese government being amplified on social media using bots, which are automated programs that repeatedly share or like posts. Some of these posts aim to create division between Japan and the United States.

Additionally, Digital Minister Taro Kono commented on foreign interference risks, including those reported in connection with Japan’s House of Councillors election, underscoring the importance of monitoring these situations closely.
