Sohei Kamiya, leader of the Sanseitō party, appeared on BS Nippon Television’s “Shinso NEWS” to discuss his views on tariff negotiations with the Trump administration. Trump announced that starting August 1, Japanese products would face a 25% reciprocal tariff. Kamiya expressed disagreement with the Japanese government’s approach, suggesting Trump aims to change global political norms, reversing trends like DEI initiatives, carbon reduction, and immigration policies. He believes if Japan can align as a partner, they may negotiate better conditions on tariffs.
Both Trump and the Sanseitō party use slogans prioritizing their respective countries—“America First” and “Japanese First.” Kamiya stated each country should prioritize its interests while collaborating, rather than merely yielding to stronger nations, and suggested negotiating philosophically aligned deals with Trump.
Regarding recent U.S. military actions against Iranian nuclear facilities, Kamiya emphasized the importance of preventing larger conflicts, despite minor treaty violations. Responding to concerns about global domination through force, Kamiya remarked this is an age-old practice, citing WWII as a historical instance where force determined outcomes.
He also commented on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, asserting that wars always have narratives from both sides, referencing WWII as an example. The program featured other political figures, including Hitoshi Aoyagi of Nippon Ishin no Kai and Mitsunari Okamoto of Komeito, who shared their perspectives on international issues.
