Dual Citizenship + Spouse – Moving to Japan for a Gap year with possibility of part-time work

Hello,

My partner and I are looking to take a gap year and move to Japan. I have dual citizenship as a Japanese-American and have a current US and Japanese Passport. My partner just has an American passport. If we work at all during our time there, I would want it to be very part time for spending money only. Also, sorry if this has been asked before!! I would love to be redirected to the post if it has already been asked.

My questions are:

– Any recommendations for jobs for someone who wants very part time work that has dual citizenship? I have conversational fluency but cannot read/write. My partner speaks no Japanese whatsoever. Outside of the obvious which is English tutoring, which I am not opposed to.

– How would we go about renting an apartment as a foreigner? I have heard this can be challenging for people that are not Japanese. Would it be easier with my dual citizenship?

– How would we go about paying taxes and getting health insurance while we are there?

– Is there anything else outside of this that I am not considering above that I should be asking about?

Also, for reference we are planning this gap year to happen in about a year or 2 once our current lease in the US is up. Thank you!

Additionally – do I need to renounce my US citizenship to live in Japan for a year?
