East Japan Railway’s travel subsidiary announced on Aug. 13 that six crew members aboard its luxury sleeper train, the Train Suite Shiki-shima, had been drinking wine and champagne for years outside the scope of their duties.
The employees were authorized to sample beverages for quality control, but an internal probe found they had repeatedly consumed alcohol during breaks for non-work purposes. The misconduct came to light in January after an internal tip-off.
The company says all six were disciplined under internal rules. President Hiroyuki Sawada will forfeit 30% of his monthly salary for one month in acknowledgment of the lapse.
