A friend and I are travelling from Tokyo to the art islands (Naoshima etc) area by train in a couple of weeks. As this is a long journey, we’d like to break the trip up by staying somewhere for a night on the way. Can anyone suggest somewhere a little off the beaten track that we could stop? We love small villages, good food, art, nature, architecture, and music. Also probably worth noting that this is our third trip to Japan, and that we’ve already been to Kyoto/Osaka/Hakone before.
