Going to Fukuoka in january next year, already got my flight tickets, total of 5 days, plan to get the 3 day north kyushu JR pass, here's my itinerary so far, all of them are day trips and I'll be staying the night in Fukuoka for all five days
Day 1: flight arrival at 8am, explore Fukuoka
Day 2: Beppu and Yufuin
Day 3: Kumamoto and Aso
Day 4: Nagasaki (brief stop at Takeo Onsen to visit romon and transfer train)
Day 5: explore Fukuoka and night flight departure
Questions/notes
1. For day 3 in Kumamoto, my plan is to just have a 30mins-1hr stop in Aso station to have a local sightseeing and not going to the Mt. Aso caldera bcs it's not within my budget to pay extra for the round trip bus tickets and I also bring my elderly mum so it's probably better to skip the hike. Moreover, I'm kinda interested to take the Aso Boy train lol
I know visiting just the Aso station might sound like a waste of time, so maybe you guys have any suggestion on what to do within the same route to Kumamoto? Or should I just spend the whole day in Kumamoto?

I checked that some trains require seat reservation and with the 3 day pass I can only make the free reservation on the ticket vending machine, should I make the reservation right after I land or is it safe to make the reservation few hours before the train departure?

Should I only stay in Fukuoka or consider staying the night in other city? Already did a quick check for hotel rooms and they're kinda expensive (I'm looking for triple room if possible since we're a group of three). It's already hard enough for me to find a room in Fukuoka that fits my budget for triple room lol
