The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) announced that two service members died during training exercises in Oita Prefecture.
The deceased were both stationed at the JGSDF’s Kusu Garrison in Oita. They were in their 20s and held the rank of sergeant (Third-Class). Both belonged to the Western Army Tank Unit.
According to officials, the two were participating in a paired “infiltration training” exercise when they lost contact with their unit.
In the early hours of August 18, other soldiers conducting a search found the two collapsed in cardiac arrest at the Hijudai Training Area, where the exercise had been underway. At 1:14 a.m., local fire department responders confirmed both men dead.
The exact cause of death is still under investigation.
While the training program spans several days, details such as when it began remain unclear.
The JGSDF stated it is investigating both the possibility of an accident and the possibility of foul play.
