As above. Japan PR but need to have a UK bank account. Being told I can’t hold my Halifax anymore. What do people use? I have Wise but ideally would like to use a more traditional bank. Thank you.

My friend has an HSBC account that he opened on a trip back to the UK a few years ago. Has his Japanese postal address, a working debit card and online banking. Does not have a residence in the UK.
Does having PR make a difference to UK banks?
I’m with Santander & they know I’m in Japan, but if I wanted to open a new account it would have to be an expat account (not sure on the difference).
Monzo and Starling would be a good bet if it needs to be based in the UK.
I have Lloyds and monzo. As well as a Barclaycard and Amex CC. I use my parents address and only log in via VPN to be safe. Havent had an issue in 10 years. That said I dont maintain a high balance and mainly pay UK bills with them.
I have an active Nationwide account, where they are totally fine with a foreign address. I needed to let them know and some functions like UK ISA are not usable.
If you need something quick, then Wise could be a good option.
lloyds
I’d stick with Wise for simplicity. In fact I’m looking into Wise as a backup should Starling ever get shitty with me.
