A mother has died after she and her child, both Brazilian nationals, drowned off the coast of Toyohashi, Aichi Prefecture.

A 24-year-old mother from Brazil has died after she and her 5-year-old son drowned off the coast of Toyohashi, Aichi Prefecture, on Sunday afternoon.

According to police, at around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, emergency services received a call about people drowning at Terasawa Beach. The victims were identified as Sofia Nobuko Francisquini Lima (24) and her son, both Brazilian nationals residing in Toyokawa City.

Both were rescued and taken to the hospital. While the son was initially unconscious, he has since recovered and is in stable condition. However, the mother was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police said the two were part of a group of 10 friends who had come to the beach. A friend found the mother and son drowning about 20 meters from the shore and rescued them. Authorities are currently investigating the details of the incident.
