Considering switching from Dependent Visa to SSW (tokutei ginou) in Japan

Hello everyone,

I’m a Brazilian living in Japan for 3 months. I came here as a dependent since my wife is doing her master’s degree. Currently, I work part-time (arubaito) in a tire workshop, where I wash and organize tires/wheels, operate some machines, and do heavy lifting.

The problem is, with a dependent visa I can only work limited hours. Right now, I’m working around 7 hours per day, 4 days a week, and I make about ¥110,000 per month. It’s not enough to help my wife and live comfortably.

I’ve been thinking about changing my visa to SSW (tokutei ginou). Since my job is related to a tire workshop, I thought about the category Industrial Products Manufacturing. I imagine my current employer might be willing to hire me full-time if my visa allows it.

I already started researching the requirements:

  • Japanese language test (JLPT N4 or JFT-Basic)
  • Job Skill Test for Industrial Products Manufacturing

But I have a lot of doubts:

  1. Is it realistic to go from dependent visa → SSW visa in my case?
  2. How long does this whole process usually take?
  3. Is Industrial Products Manufacturing the right category for my kind of job?
  4. Are there other solutions to legally increase my working hours in Japan without changing visas?

I’d really appreciate if anyone who has gone through this process (especially other foreigners on SSW) could share their experiences or advice.

Thanks in advance!
