Low budget travelling tips starting from Osaka

I am planning a (pretty last minute) solotrip to Japan for about 2,5 weeks. My flight would go to Osaka and I think I narrowed it down to wanting to take some time to explore Osaka, visit Kyoto and do a part of the 88 temple trail on Shikoku Island. I am on a budget and would like to camp or go to hostels as much as possible. Can I get away with not booking too far in advance?

If you have any tips regarding travelling on a budget in these areas, things I should certainly visit, your own experiences in these places, general tips or anything else please share them with me! 🙂

Also for people who did part of the 88 Temple trail travelling in from the direction of Osaka: what part would you recommend (for a +- 5 day hike) and how is it to find (low budget) accomodation? How about food.

I am generally interested in culture, visiting temples, nature and good food and tea.

Thank you for any tips or advice!!

Edit:
Regarding the camping: I was thinking about if this would be an option on the trail, but someone pointed out it will still be typhoon season so maybe not… 🙂
