Fall colours in late Oct.

I am in Japan from 21st Oct to 5th Nov.
Where do I get best chances to witness fall foliage apart from Hokkaido? I am looking at mainly the Japanese Alps region, but I am open to options.

Or do I shoehorn Hokkaido into the itinerary even though it becomes somewhat hectic. I can afford at max 3 nights at Hokkaido.
