Help!! I was planning to enjoy Kawadoko during my four-day visit to Kyoto (leaving 8/31). I was working with my hotel to book a lunch at Kibune and was only told today: no seating for one. Reservations, walk in, nothin’.
So with this big tentpole of my trip scrapped, I’m looking to you Reddit! I’m not picky, lunch or dinner, just looking for a great meal on the water.
So what should I do here? Any suggestions for another place? Am I missing such a great meal I should just reserve for two and find a stranger? What’s the move?

I have coworkers who have built the Dokogawa up there for years but have never eaten there because it’s hella expensive. Looks amazing and maybe the coolest temperature wise area in Kyoto.
I did eat an equivalent style place in Northern Thailand it such a rad style to be on the river like that.
If you’re fronting the bill, I don’t think you will have a problem finding a stranger to go with, hell take my wife.
It’s been a few years since I was last up there, but at the bottom end of the set of the kaiseki restaurants there’s a cheaper teishoku place which also has a platform over the river. We had lunch there a few times. I doubt it has a no solo rule.
Whether it’s the same experience depends on whether it’s the river platform dining that makes it for you, or the kaiseki. Back in the dawn of time, I was taken to lunch at one of the kaiseki places. It was definitely a more memorable event, but I can’t say I enjoyed the food any more than the kamameshi teishoku at 1/10th the price.
Try Hirobun, i ate nagashi soumen there solo and it was fine. Right above the river and i could even see the kawadoko spot further down.
