Returning with items bought in Japan

Hi, I'm trying to find out how much additional fees would get charged if bringing back ~$1000 worth of goods bought in Japan back to the U.S.

I've never brought anything back from overseas before so I'm not at all familiar with the process in addition to the whole tariffs situation and de minimis.

From what I understand, the $800 de minimis will go away after August 31, 2025 which means that you would have to pay import taxes (how much?) on anything brought back from Japan even if the total purchases was under $800? *Please correct me if this is wrong.

If the $800 de minimis remained in effect and I bought $1000 worth of goods back from Japan, would I have only needed to pay import taxes on the amount that exceeds $800 (the $200) or would import taxes be applied to the the entire $1000 of goods?

Any clarification would be much appreciated since I'm a bit confused about this

Edit: Thanks all for your help and clarification! Knew I was confusing something, mixing up tariffs/import taxes with customs duty
