At around 12:05 p.m. on the 31st August, an emergency call was made reporting that a glider had crashed into the Tone River in Kumagaya City, Saitama Prefecture. The aircraft was found heavily damaged on a sandbank in the river at the Kuzuwada district, and police confirmed the death of a woman in her 20s who had been on board.
According to the Kumagaya Police Station, a glider competition among the Tokyo Big Six Universities was being held at the Menuma Glider Airfield along the Tone River nearby. The woman is believed to have taken off alone from the airfield heading north before crashing. The wrecked glider was identified as belonging to Keio University. Police are investigating the woman’s identity and the detailed circumstances of the accident.
