Asking Japanese manager for recommendation letter — any risks?

Hey everyone,
I’m currently working at a Japanese automotive OEM (about 2 years. Been working in the Japanese auto industry for 10 years now) and planning to apply for a master’s program in Electrical & Computer Engineering in the U.S. for Fall 2026. Most schools ask for 3 letters of recommendation.

I already have 2 lined up from my previous employers, but I feel a letter from my current company would be strongest since it shows continuity and relevance. The tricky part is that in Japan, telling your employer you’re planning to leave (even a year+ ahead of time) isn’t always straightforward.

I’m on pretty good terms with my general manager (部長). He often chats with me casually, even about non-work stuff during cigarette breaks, and overall I think he likes me. But I’m worried if asking him for a recommendation could backfire — e.g. damaging trust, making my future work environment awkward, or even affecting evaluations.

Would it be safer to just avoid asking at my current job and rely on other sources? Or is it possible to frame it in a way that doesn’t cause suspicion?

Has anyone here asked their Japanese employer for an academic recommendation while still employed? How did it go?

Thanks in advance!
