Shigeko Kagawa, a 114-year-old woman from Yamato-Koriyama City in Nara Prefecture, is now the oldest living person in Japan. She said the secret to her long life is staying active—especially walking around a lot while working as an OB-GYN, even late at night or on her days off.
Japan’s previous oldest person, Miyoko Hirose from Oita Prefecture, passed away on July 29, making Kagawa—born May 28, 1911—the oldest.
Kagawa grew up in Yamato-Koriyama and worked as both an OB-GYN and an internal medicine doctor, staying active even into her 80s. Today, she lives with her family, eats three proper meals a day, and enjoys calligraphy at her local day care center.
When asked again about her secret to longevity, she humbly said, “There’s no secret. I just walked a lot when I was working, so my legs are strong.” She added, “I just hope to stay healthy every day.”
The city’s mayor praised her, saying her long life may be thanks to the many lives she helped bring into the world as a doctor, and he wished her continued good health and happiness.
