Mother and other members of a “rip-off” group arrested for misusing dating apps

A group that used dating apps to scam people at bars has been busted, and now even the mother of one member has been arrested.

According to Tokyo police, Leo Nagai and his mother, Hiromi Nagai, are suspected of luring a man to a bar in Shibuya in May using a dating app. Once there, they allegedly scammed him out of 4.7 million yen by charging fake fees, including high food and drink bills and bogus “cancellation fees.”

Hiromi reportedly admitted to the charges, saying, “My son was making good money running a scam bar, so I thought I’d try it too.”

Three other group members were also re-arrested for using a dating app for people with disabilities to trick more victims.

One victim, a blind man in his 20s, said:

Police are continuing to investigate the group’s full operation.
