Is the first one not what you want pilots to do? Call in and not fly if they had been drinking? Like I get business wise that’s not great for JAL but I’d rather a pilots admit they drank and not try to fly than think “fuck it, I can probably do it”
This one is crazy, cause Japan is the only place I have heard that has delivery drivers blow into a breathalyzer first thing when arriving at work every day. I would expect pilots to have the same
Does anyone know what the rules are for pilots surrounding alcohol consumption a) internationally/in general, and b) for Japanese companies? I don’t even know if there are separate rule sets.
Surely there’s a “don’t consume alcohol less than X hours before flying” rule, and even then it’s good to have a breathalyser test. It doesn’t say so in the article, but what if pilots are called in early to make up for staff shortages but they’ve had a drink, thinking they would be free? But I also believe there are minimum rest times airlines have to provide. I don’t know enough about the industry to say for sure.
