Leaving Japan for a year without holding my daughter back a grade

Hi everyone,

My family will be moving abroad for a year beginning in 2027. My daughter is currently enrolled at our local elementary school. We will be living abroad during what would be her 5th year and I'm wondering if there's a way to keep up with her studies during that time so that she can reenter her school as a 6th year when we come back to Japan.

She's very worried about being held back a grade and not being in the same class as her friends. This is compounded by the fact that the local Junior High is right next door and virtually everyone that goes to the elementary school goes there for JHS. So she wouldn't just be a grade below her friends for a year, but for four years in total.

There are no Japanese or International schools in the area we will be living, so I'm not sure what, if anything we can do to satisfy the BOE that she's capable of rejoining her current grade after a year away.

The only advice I've gotten so far is to talk to her school and the city hall, both of which we will do this month. But I thought I'd try here to see if anyone has had a similar experience or can point me in the right direction.

Thanks

Edited to add:
Thank you everyone for the generous advice! I'm feeling much better about the situation. I'll be sure to speak with the school and get specifics on what we can do while we're away to make her transition back into school as seamless as possible. As someone mentioned, it will be hard work, but if it's likely she'll be able to rejoin her classmates, I think she'll be extra-motivated to keep up with the curriculum.
