My husband and I are traveling to Japan in a couple of weeks and I thought to book this tour, then wander around Arashiyama for the bamboo forest and other sites.
What’s the best way to get back to the Gion area of Kyoto from Arashiyama? Kyoto station is about a 40min walk to the hotel.

Oh we are going to be there in a couple of weeks as well. I’m planning on letting Google maps tell us. But what I really want to know is : are you at all worried about typhoon season messing up the river ride plans ? I haven’t tried to book for that reason alone.
For questions like this the Get There and Around section of the city/region pages on JapanGuide give a quick basic overview of transit options. You can toggle between different starting points.

No need to go via Kyoto station – you can travel from Arashiyama across to Gion without the need to head down to Kyoto station and back up again.
However, regardless of the route you take, it will involve a change of buses, or a change from train to bus.
Probably the fastest way is to catch the Randen (a cute little railway) from Arashiyama to Shijo-Omiya station in the central shopping district, and then catch a bus from outside the station over to Gion. Alternatively, you could walk from the central shopping district over to Gion if you’re feeling energetic and if the weather is good.
The easiest would be taking Hankyu Arashiyama line to Katsura and change to another train to Kawaramachi, which is across the bridge over the Kamogawa River from Gion.
Oh that’s good. Through Klook?
You won’t regret it – the river boat was one of the top highlights of my trip.
As for the return trip question, I just headed back to Saga Arashiyama station and used google to find my way back to Sanjo station.
