Mt Fuji climbers will now be refused entry if they don’t wear proper clothing

TL;DR This year, Mt Fuji climbers will be denied entry at the 5th station if they are not properly equipped, as mountain rangers now have the authority to enforce clothing regulations. This change, along with a 4,000-yen climbing fee and a time-restricted entry gate, aims to enhance climber safety and protect the mountain environment.

  1. It’s ridiculous this even needs to be a thing. It’s a mountain you dummies, you’re not tiptoeing through the tulips here.

  2. In 2024, there were about 200,000 climbers. 83 needed rescuing. There were 10 fatalities. By and large, the vast majority have no problems. It’s that 0.04% that need to be stopped.

  3. I just got back last week and it seemed they were already starting to do this. Our tour company reviewed all of our packs and wouldn’t let us continue if we didn’t have proper rain gear or headlamps. Definitely smarter to figure it out before people start climbing.

  4. This seems good, wasn’t there a tourist who went up in light clothing, got stuck and had to be helicoptered out? And then went back again and got stuck again?
